Falls prevention training
Sept 2024 - In person, 1 day
This day training was important for quanitifying falls risk and highlighting patients are higher risk of sustaining falls whilst admitted. It taught me about where falls most likely occurs, when and what steps can be taken to reduce chances of a patient suffering a fall. Falls are an inevitable part of adult inpatient care, however we should always be striving to reduce the frequency to improve patient safety and outcomes.
Amputee rehabilitation and recovery study day
Apr 24 - in person, 1 day
I attended a study day organised by Guy's and St Thomas' amputee rehabilitation team. This covered early walking aids and long term management. I found the day a very insightful one, giving me knowledge of a specialism I only knew a little about beforehand. Having this knowledge has been really helpful when working inpatients as occasionally there are patients admitted who are amputees. By having these skills, I am able to start rehabilitation and ensure patient safety via access to appropriate equipment and aids.
Mar 24 - In person, 1 day
I spent a day with the Croydon University Hospital Radiography team learning about what a radiographer does, imaging and its place in clinical practise. This was very inciteful as working in paediatric musculoskeletal care it was useful to see where patients referred for x-rays go. As a service, my team have a big involvement in the scoliosis pathway as often we are the clinicians detecting and requesting imaging to rule in/out spinal curvature. Likewise, ruling out fractures in children is a really difficult but vital skill. Often children present to clinic with very extreme symptoms which may raise concerns that imaging is indicated, however there is always a risk of exposure to radiation, especially for girls pre- and peri-puberty. Imaging is also an expectation of parents/carers and careful unpicking and reassurance through education is required.
